Library

The Orange County Library System serves residents through physical collections, digital materials, research databases, classes, events, technology access, meeting and study spaces, home delivery, accessibility services, and specialized assistance. This article explains how to use the library, manage a library card and PIN, borrow and renew materials, request delivery, locate classes and research services, reserve spaces, use digital tools, and avoid common account problems.

Library Services and Access

The Orange County Library System website is the main starting point for library services. It connects users with the catalog, library locations, account tools, digital collections, classes, events, research databases, the Melrose Center, and other programs offered through the system.

A library card provides access to much more than printed books. Cardholders can check out physical materials such as books, DVDs, music CDs, and audiobooks in multiple formats. Depending on account status and the particular service, the card can also be used for e-books, downloadable audiobooks, digital music, classes, programs, computer access, room reservations, and online research services.

The library also maintains services for different ages and needs, including early learning activities, programs for children and teens, technology instruction, career resources, language learning, citizenship preparation, genealogy resources, arts and maker activities, and virtual events. Because services vary by branch, program, room, and date, users should verify the location and registration details for the specific activity they plan to attend.

Library Cards and Account Basics

The library's card and account guidance explains the responsibilities that come with using an Orange County Library System card. A library card is assigned to the individual cardholder and may not be used by another person.

Cardholders should keep their account information current. If a home address, telephone number, or email address changes, the library directs customers to update the information by contacting the library, visiting a location, or submitting updated information through the online account system. This is particularly important when materials are being delivered because the cardholder remains responsible if requested materials are sent to an outdated address.

Lost or Misplaced Cards

A lost or misplaced library card should be reported immediately so the library can deactivate it. Until the loss is reported, the cardholder remains responsible for items, fines, and fees that accumulate on the card. Waiting to report a missing card can therefore create account problems that would have been easier to prevent.

Current Fee Card Rules

Users should also be aware of a significant change to the library's Fee Card Program. Beginning July 31, 2026, Orange County Library System stopped offering new fee cards. Existing fee cards remain active through their current expiration dates, but they cannot be renewed after expiration. The library also states that fee card purchases are non-refundable.

This distinction matters for anyone relying on older information about purchasing or renewing a fee card. A currently active fee card may continue to work until its expiration date, but it should not be assumed that another fee card can be purchased afterward.

PINs and Online Account Tools

A PIN expands what a cardholder can do through the library's online and telephone services. The library directs users to the My Account area of its website, where they can enter their last name and library card number. A customer without a PIN will be prompted to create one.

With a card and PIN, online services include checking an account, renewing eligible materials, requesting home delivery, registering for certain classes and programs, accessing e-books and downloadable audiobooks, using digital music services, and opening research resources for newspapers, periodicals, homework assistance, language learning, and other subjects.

A PIN also supports services used at library locations. The library identifies Wi-Fi access, public computer use, applications on library computers, and self-service checkout as services associated with card and PIN access.

Account Standing Matters

Some services are restricted when an account has problems. For checking out, renewing, or requesting materials, the account balance must be less than $10. The library also requires an account in good standing for activities such as downloading audiobooks, e-books, or songs, signing up for a computer session, registering for a computer class, and reserving a meeting room or study room.

Users who encounter an unexpected account restriction should review their account status rather than repeatedly trying the same transaction. A balance, account block, or another account condition may prevent the service from proceeding.

Borrowing and Renewal Rules

Orange County Library System states that materials check out for 21 days. Customers receive an itemized receipt when checking out materials, which provides a useful record of the items borrowed.

Automatic and Manual Renewals

Most circulating materials are eligible for renewal up to five times. Three days before the due date, an eligible item is automatically renewed. Automatic renewal does not apply when an item has a hold placed on it or when the cardholder's account has a block.

Users should therefore avoid assuming that every checked-out item will automatically receive another loan period. The account should be reviewed near the due date, particularly when an item is popular or when there may be an unresolved account issue.

Eligible materials may also be renewed through the online account or through the library's telephone renewal service. Keeping the library card information available makes it easier to identify the account when using account-based services.

Returning Library Materials

Materials may be returned to any Orange County Library System location, regardless of the location where they were originally checked out. During open hours, customers returning materials at a service desk or Drive-Up Window may request a check-in receipt.

Every location also has an after-hours book drop. Items deposited after hours are checked in on the next day that location is open. That timing is worth remembering when reviewing an online account immediately after an after-hours return because the item may not yet have been processed.

Lost and Damaged Items

The library charges the cost of an item when it is lost or damaged. If a lost item is later found in good condition within one month after payment, a refund may be issued. The library does not accept a replacement copy instead of payment for a lost or damaged item because it maintains control over the quality and content of materials added to its collection.

Fees can be paid at a library location, through a library card account using Visa, MasterCard, or Discover, or through the library's telephone service. Personal checks are not accepted.

Catalog Searches and Digital Materials

The Orange County Library System catalog can be used to locate printed books, large-print materials, movies, digital titles, and other collection items. Search results can be narrowed using format buttons and the filters displayed with search results.

For example, a customer looking specifically for large-print books can complete a keyword search and then refine the results by format. The catalog also identifies digital titles available through platforms such as Libby and hoopla. When supported by the title, the catalog displays options to place a hold or borrow through the appropriate digital service.

Accessibility-related catalog searches can also be more specific. The library advises users looking for closed-captioned videos to search using the phrase "hearing impaired." Users seeking descriptive video materials can search with terms such as "descriptive video" or "DVS."

Learning and Research Services

The library's Learning and Research section brings together educational databases, homework resources, technology instruction, career services, language learning, and subject-specific research tools.

Homework resources include Brainfuse, Gale resources for elementary, middle, and high school users, LearningExpress Library, and Science Online. Technology learning includes Digital Learn, LinkedIn Learning, live online classes, and on-demand instruction.

Career-oriented services include Big Interview, job classes and events, LearningExpress Library, ResumeMaker, and the library's career guidance material. Language learners can locate face-to-face English classes, Learn English at OCLS, Mango, the Open Language Lab, Pronunciator, and Rocket Languages.

The research collection also covers subjects such as automobile repair, biography, literature, business, investing, marketing, current events, genealogy, general reference, grants, health and medicine, employment guidance, magazines, journals, and Spanish-language resources.

These resources can differ in how they are accessed. Some services are available through the library website, while account-based databases may require a valid library card and PIN. Users should sign into the appropriate library account when a database or digital service requests library authentication.

Classes and Library Events

The classes and events calendar includes both in-person and virtual activities. The calendar can be filtered by location, type of experience, category, audience, and day of the week, making it useful when a customer needs a particular class rather than simply browsing upcoming events.

Programs cover a wide range of subjects, including basic technology, business and career skills, coding and robotics, education, citizenship, arts and crafting, maker activities, language learning, genealogy, health, science, storytimes, photography, audio and video production, graphic design, and other topics.

Registration and Attendance

Registration requirements differ from event to event. Some programs are specifically marked as requiring registration, while others allow attendance without registration. The library states that registration is strongly encouraged for in-person events because attendance may be limited.

Before traveling to a branch, review the event listing for the correct date, start time, branch, room, audience, and registration status. Several branches may offer similar classes on the same day, and selecting the wrong location in the calendar can lead to arriving at a branch that is not hosting the chosen session.

Home Delivery Requests

The library provides free home delivery for items that are eligible to be requested. According to the home delivery service information, requests may be made through the catalog, in person at a branch, or over the telephone.

The current catalog also uses home delivery as the default fulfillment method when a customer places a hold on an eligible item. This is a particularly useful detail for people accustomed to an older catalog interface where a similar function appeared as a separate request option.

Customers relying on home delivery should make sure their address on the library account is accurate before submitting requests. The library's account rules state that users remain responsible when requested materials are delivered to an incorrect address because the account information was not updated.

Meeting Rooms and Studios

Orange County Library System maintains reservable spaces at multiple locations. The rooms and studios directory allows users to review spaces by library location, capacity, room type, and special requirements.

Available types include meeting rooms, study rooms, co-working rooms, studios, simulators, and specialized Melrose Center spaces. The Melrose Center listings include facilities associated with audio production, video production, photography, podcasting, game development, virtual reality, editing, makerspace equipment, rehearsal activities, and simulators.

Capacity varies significantly. Some rooms are designed for individuals or very small groups, while larger meeting rooms can accommodate substantially more people. Users should select a room based on both activity and group size rather than assuming every location offers the same type of space.

A valid account in good standing is required to reserve a meeting room or study room. Because the room directory includes spaces with different requirements, users should review the particular room listing before planning a meeting, project, class, recording session, or other activity.

Library App Features

The OCLS mobile app combines several frequently used library services in one interface. Users can search the catalog, receive book recommendations, access e-books and audiobooks, review classes and events, and register for available programs.

The app also provides access to holds, current checkouts, event registrations, and room reservations. It can display a digital library card, which may also be added to a supported device wallet.

Inside a library location, the app includes a "Checkout an Item" feature that allows customers to borrow items while browsing the stacks. It can also identify the nearest library location and provide directions.

The app does not remove the need to maintain the underlying library account. Problems involving account standing, blocks, balances, or card information may still affect services accessed through a mobile device.

Accessibility and Assistive Services

Orange County Library System provides equipment and services intended to improve access for customers with visual, reading, hearing, or physical disabilities. The library's assistive services information describes accessible materials, assistive computer stations, magnification equipment, talking books, and other options.

Assistive Computer Stations

Each library location has a computer station equipped with assistive software. The listed technologies include JAWS for Windows, which uses speech synthesis to read screen text; MAGic Screen Magnification, which enlarges screen images and text; and OpenBook, which supports conversion of printed material for accessible use.

Assistive vision stations are available at branch locations and on the fourth floor of the Orlando Public Library. The library also identifies a TOPAZ HD Magnifier on the fourth floor of the Orlando Public Library for magnifying documents, newspapers, photographs, and other materials.

Accessible Reading Materials

The Talking Books program serves Orange County residents who cannot easily use printed materials, including individuals with visual impairments, reading disabilities, or physical disabilities that prevent use of standard print materials.

The library also describes the Library eBook Accessibility Program through its downloadable media services. Qualified resident patrons may receive access to accessible formats including DAISY and Braille that can be used with compatible computers, assistive reading devices, Braille printers, and certain audio devices.

For customers who are Deaf or hard of hearing, the system identifies Video Relay Services as a method for communicating through American Sign Language with the assistance of a qualified video interpreter. A dedicated Telecommunications Device for the Deaf contact number is included with the contact information at the end of this article.

Social Worker Assistance

The library also provides one-on-one support through its Library Social Workers program. Areas of assistance include career skills training, counseling and mental health referrals, food and SNAP benefits, government services, healthcare and Marketplace information, immigration referrals, housing information, and reemployment guidance.

Library social workers provide support and referrals rather than guaranteeing particular outcomes. Their assistance does not replace legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice.

Appointments and Walk-In Visits

Appointments may be scheduled at selected branches on different weekdays. The reference schedule identifies Monday appointments at Alafaya Branch, Orlando Public Library, and South Trail Branch; Tuesday appointments at Hiawassee Branch, Orlando Public Library, and Southeast Branch; Wednesday appointments at Fairview Shores Branch, Orlando Public Library, and South Creek Branch; and Thursday appointments at Chickasaw Branch, North Orange Branch, and Orlando Public Library.

Appointments can be booked up to seven days in advance. Cancellations may create additional openings, so availability can change. The program also offers walk-in service on alternating Fridays and Saturdays at Alafaya Branch, Orlando Public Library, and South Trail Branch, subject to change. Customers may alternatively request a telephone call or email from a library social worker.

Common Library Account Mistakes

Many preventable problems involve account status rather than the library service itself. A few distinctions are especially useful when planning a transaction:

Do not allow another person to use a card issued in your name.

Report a lost card promptly because responsibility continues until the loss is reported.

Update address and contact information before requesting home delivery.

Do not assume an item automatically renewed without reviewing the account; holds and account blocks can prevent renewal.

Remember that after-hours returns are processed the next day the location is open.

Keep the account balance below $10 when trying to check out, renew, or request materials.

Maintain an account in good standing for digital downloads, computer sessions, computer classes, and room reservations.

Do not bring a replacement copy for a lost or damaged library item in place of payment.

Do not rely on older information suggesting that a new fee card can be purchased; new fee cards have not been offered since July 31, 2026.

Review each class or event listing for its exact branch and registration requirement before attending.

Library FAQs

Who qualifies for a free Orange County resident library card?

People who live in Orange County, Florida can apply for a resident card account, which includes borrowing privileges for physical and digital materials. Applications are available online or in person. For in-person registration, the library requires appropriate identification showing proof of address and takes a photo for additional account verification. The official library card sign-up page provides the current eligibility and application options.

Can Winter Park or Maitland residents get an Orange County library card?

Residents of Maitland and Winter Park receive a reciprocal borrower card rather than a standard Orange County resident account. The reciprocal card allows the holder to check out materials from the shelves at Orange County Library System locations, but it does not include e-books, databases, public computers, home delivery, item holds, or several other account-based services. This difference is important when deciding whether a particular library service will be available.

Can Orange County property owners qualify without living in the county?

Property owners may qualify for a property owner card account when they own property within Orange County, except within Maitland or Winter Park. The library requires applicants to apply in person and present a current property tax receipt for property located within the Library District. Eligibility is based on qualifying property ownership rather than simply owning property somewhere in the county.

What should I do if I forgot my library card number?

You do not necessarily need to apply for another account. The library provides an online account-recovery form for existing cardholders who cannot remember their card number. Submit the requested information so staff can attempt to locate the existing account. Starting with account recovery can help avoid creating an unnecessary duplicate account.

Which Orange County library branches are open on Sundays?

Sunday availability is limited to selected locations rather than every branch. The library's locations and hours directory identifies branches currently marked as open Sundays and lists their operating schedules. Check the directory shortly before visiting because holiday closures or schedule changes can affect normal hours.
